Has your child or anyone you know taken Risperdal®?
Risperdal® is also known by the generic name
risperidone. If so, the child might be at risk for
serious, potentially irreversible side effects, including:
Breast development in boys (gynecomastia): Risperdal® may increase the amount of a certain hormone (prolactin) in blood.
Symptoms may include growth of breast(s), possibly with pain or nipple discharge. A mastectomy may be required to remove the breast(s).
Involuntary muscle movements (extrapyramidal symptoms/ tardive dyskinesia): The chance that this will happen or that it will become permanent is increased in those who take Risperdal® in higher doses or for a long time. Muscle problems may also occur after short-term treatment with low doses. There may be muscle problems in any or all of the following: arms, legs, tongue, face, mouth, or jaw. Some of the specific uncontrollable movements in the face may include tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, and chewing movements.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A possibly fatal syndrome, with symptoms including stiff muscles, sweating, fever, confusion, abnormal thinking, and fast or irregular heartbeat has been reported with Risperdal® usage.
Diabetes: There are reports of diabetes that may be linked to use of Risperdal®. Side effects of the drug, including weight gain and increase in blood sugar, may contribute to new onset diabetes.
An antipsychotic drug, Risperdal® was originally approved for use in adults with schizophrenia and, later, for treatment of acute mania or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar Disorder. However, Risperdal has consistently been prescribed for children to treat autism, irritability, aggression and other behavior disorders including Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Recently, Risperdal was approved for very limited uses in children. Some children have experienced significant, dangerous side effects, such as weight gain, diabetes mellitus, movement disorders and growth of breasts in boys.
